Judo Alberta Coach Code of Conduct

Judo Alberta Coaches Code of Conduct and Agreement for coaches who travel with Team Alberta

Please ensure that you have read and fully understand this document before signing and agreeing to:

As a Judo Alberta coach, I recognize that I am a representative of Judo Alberta and therefore on and off the mat and in competition, I will:

• Show respect to others involved in the sport, including competition officials, athletes, coaches, managers, medical staff, and spectators.

• Promote fair play and high standards of behaviour to all members of the Judo Alberta Team.

• Respect the decision of the sport officials, referees, competition officials, medical staff, and, if appealing a decision, will do so in a civil, and professional manner.

• Avoid entering the field of play without the referee’s permission.

• Avoid engaging in inappropriate criticism of the competition officials, athletes, coaches, and/or managers.

• Co-operate fully with medical personnel for each athlete’s best interests.

• Avoid engaging in, or tolerate, offensive, insulting, bullying, or abusive language or behaviour.

• Ensure all activities I organise are appropriate for the athletes’ ability, level, age, and maturity.

• Agree to comply with all reasonable requests of the Judo Alberta HP Coach, Judo Alberta HP Chair of Coaches, and the President of Judo Alberta

When working with Athletes, I will:

• Consider the overall physical and mental health, well-being, health, and safety of each athlete above everything, including winning, competing, and increasing ranking

• Clearly communicate and adhere to the rules, guidelines, and consequences to team members regarding the use of alcohol, illicit drugs or banned substance as outline in the Judo Alberta Athlete Code of Conduct

• Refrain from the use of profane, insulting, harassing or otherwise offensive language in the conduct of your duties and refrain from verbal or physical behaviours that constitute harassment or abuse.

• Exercise ethical and moral judgement in addition to complying with local laws with regards to consumption or use of products such as alcohol or marijuana while in the presence of and/or supervising minors. Although legal in Canada, these products are considered banned or restricted products for athletes in judo.

• Abstain from consuming alcohol in a private environment (eg. Hotel room) with minors present.

• Handle all conflict with dignity and understanding

• Review the Judo Canada Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy for reference.: 

• Respect and always adhere to the boundaries with regards to personal and professional relationships between athlete and coach at all times.

• Communicate and co-operate with registered medical practitioners in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of athlete’s physical, mental health and well-being, both immediate and future, respecting the athlete’s autonomy and in keeping his/her personal and athletic values and goals.

As a representative of Judo Alberta in competitions in Canada (“A” level events, National Championships) or abroad when travelling with Judo Alberta, I will:

• Cooperate fully with the Judo Alberta staff and other representing coaches and work as a cohesive and effective team for Judo Alberta

• Take on full responsibility, and acknowledge the significance of representing Judo Alberta at Judo Canada “A” Levels events and international Level Events

• Behave in the manner and understand the Judo Canada Coaches Code of Conduct & Ethics.

• Have a full understanding of the most up to date IJF Rules and promote adherence to these rules by the athletes.

• Review and follow the logistics and protocol, to lead a provincial/ national/international competition team abroad.

• In the rare case there is only one coach on a Judo Alberta trip there will be no coaching in matches that feature Alberta vs Alberta athletes

• Fulfil the roles and responsibilities as a member of the Judo Alberta Coaching staff with respect, dignity and the highest standards of ethics and morals

In the absence of the Provincial Head Coach (who would normally be in charge) I will take on the responsibility (if so designated) for the following:

 Registration of athletes

 Collection of Accreditations.

 Confirmation of bookings for training areas for pre-tournament trainings.

 Attend the Draw and all responsibilities associated with this task.

 Correct any misinformation or miscommunication between the Federation, Tournament Organisers and/or Judo Canada staff & representatives.

 Attend any drug testing as outlined by the tournament directors.

 Immediately notify Head Office (Judo AB and/or Judo Canada) of all competition results, injuries, non-adherence to the Judo Alberta Code of Ethics and Conduct, and situations not conducive to the overall well-being of the Athlete and Judo Alberta.

 PLEASE NOTE: This list is not exhaustive.

I understand that if I do not follow the Code, any/all the following actions may be taken by Judo Alberta

• I may be required to meet with the Judo Alberta President or Executive

• I may be required to meet with the Judo Alberta Harassment Officer(s)

• I may be required attend/take an educational course relating to the offense.

• I may be suspended or fined by Judo Alberta as directed by the Judo AB disciplinary

committee.

• I may have my Judo Canada/Judo Alberta membership withdrawn.

I have read and agree to comply with the above policies and procedures detailed in the Judo Alberta Coach Code of Conduct
